Atome Reports Completion of Front-End Engineering Design Study

Singapore, 23 March 2023

– Atome Energy, a global leader in nuclear fusion, today announced the completion of the front-end engineering design study (FEED) for its demonstrator fusion reactor. The FEED study was conducted in collaboration with Bechtel Corporation, a leading global engineering and construction company, and Assystem, a global engineering and consulting firm specializing in the nuclear sector. The study included detailed design of the reactor’s core, blanket, and fuel assemblies, as well as the systems and components needed to support fusion reactions. “The completion of the FEED study is a significant milestone for Atome Energy,” said Tom Murray, President of Atome Energy. “It provides a detailed blueprint for the construction and operation of our demonstrator fusion reactor, which will pave the way for the commercialization of fusion energy.” The FEED study confirmed the technical feasibility of the Atome Energy demonstrator reactor design. The study also optimized the reactor’s performance, reducing its size and cost while maintaining its ability to generate net electricity. “The FEED study has demonstrated the technical maturity of Atome Energy’s design,” said Benn Lockley, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Atome Energy. “We are confident that our demonstrator reactor will be successful in proving the commercial viability of fusion energy.” Atome Energy plans to start construction of its demonstrator fusion reactor in 2024. The reactor is expected to begin operating in 2026 and will generate approximately 100 megawatts of thermal power. “Fusion energy has the potential to provide a safe, clean, and virtually limitless source of energy for the world,” said Steve Stitzel, President of Bechtel Nuclear, Power and Government Services. “We are proud to partner with Atome Energy to bring this revolutionary technology to reality.” “Atome Energy’s FEED study is a major step forward in the development of fusion energy,” said Jean-Luc Fiévet, Head of Assystem’s Nuclear Business Line. “We are excited to continue our collaboration with Atome Energy and contribute to the successful construction and operation of their demonstrator fusion reactor.”

Atome Reports Completion of Front-End Engineering Design Study

Singapore, 15 February 2023

– Atome Energy, a leading developer of advanced nuclear technologies, today announced the completion of the front-end engineering design (FEED) study for its first commercial nuclear power plant. The FEED study, conducted in partnership with Bechtel, a global engineering, procurement, and construction company, provides a detailed design of the plant’s systems and infrastructure. The study also includes an assessment of the plant’s environmental impact and safety features. “The completion of the FEED study is a significant milestone for Atome and brings us one step closer to realizing our vision of delivering clean, safe, and affordable nuclear energy,” said Greg Smith, CEO of Atome Energy. The FEED study provides the necessary technical foundation for Atome to proceed with the construction of its first commercial nuclear power plant. The plant is expected to be operational by the mid-2030s and will produce enough electricity to power approximately 1.5 million homes. Atome’s nuclear power plants are designed to be inherently safe and resistant to accidents. The plants use a molten salt reactor technology that operates at a lower temperature and pressure than traditional nuclear reactors. This design makes the plants less likely to experience accidents and allows for a more efficient use of fuel. The company is also developing advanced nuclear fuel technologies that will further improve the safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of its nuclear power plants. “We believe that Atome’s nuclear power plants have the potential to be a game-changer for the energy industry,” said Smith. “Our plants are designed to be safe, clean, and affordable, and we are committed to working with our partners to bring this technology to the world.”
