World-Class Sports Science Introduced to the Central Coast

The Central Coast is now home to a world-class sports science hub, bringing cutting-edge technology and expertise to the region. The facility, located at the University of Newcastle’s Central Coast campus, will provide athletes, coaches, and researchers with access to state-of-the-art resources. “This facility is a game-changer for the Central Coast,” said Professor Wayne Webster, Head of School of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Newcastle. “It will enable us to attract and retain elite athletes and coaches, while also providing our students with invaluable hands-on experience.” The hub features: * A biomechanics laboratory with motion capture cameras and force plates * An environmental chamber to simulate different training conditions * A nutrition and hydration center * A recovery and rehabilitation suite These facilities will allow athletes to monitor and improve their performance, reduce injury risk, and optimize their recovery. The hub will also serve as a research center, where scientists will investigate the latest advancements in sports science. “We’re excited about the potential of this facility to contribute to the development of future sporting champions on the Central Coast,” said Darren Summerfield, Director of the Central Coast Mariners Academy. “Our young athletes will now have access to the same resources as elite professionals.” The establishment of the sports science hub is part of a broader strategy to position the Central Coast as a leading destination for sports and fitness. The region is already home to the Central Coast Mariners football club and the Central Coast Stadium, which has hosted several major sporting events. “This facility will help us to attract major sporting events to the Central Coast and showcase our region to the world,” said Central Coast Council Mayor Lisa Matthews. “It will also provide a significant economic boost to the local economy.” The hub is the result of a collaboration between the University of Newcastle, the Central Coast Council, and the NSW Government. It is expected to open to the public in early 2024.The University of Newcastle and Central Coast Council have partnered to launch a new world-class sports science facility in Gosford, NSW which offers sports science expertise to athletes and teams in the region. The facility, located at the Central Coast Sports and Recreation Centre, includes a state-of-the-art laboratory with equipment for measuring athletic performance, such as a 3D motion capture system, a force plate, and a VO2 max treadmill. It also has a dedicated team of sports scientists who can provide athletes with personalized training and recovery programs. The facility is expected to benefit athletes of all levels, from elite professionals to recreational participants. It will also be used for research and teaching purposes by the University of Newcastle’s School of Health Sciences. The partnership between the University of Newcastle and Central Coast Council is part of a broader commitment to developing the Central Coast as a leading destination for sports tourism. The region is already home to a number of major sporting events, including the annual IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. The new sports science facility is expected to further enhance the Central Coast’s reputation as a center for sporting excellence.
