Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole threw his support behind manager Mauricio Pochettino, calling his position “the toughest in football” despite the team’s disappointing season.
Pochettino’s first year at the helm hasn’t gone according to plan. Chelsea’s trophy hopes are dashed, and they find themselves stuck in the middle of the Premier League table. However, Cole, a Blues stalwart with 282 appearances, argues against Pochettino’s dismissal.
Cole highlights the immense pressure Pochettino faces. He inherited a squad assembled by previous regimes and must meet expectations sky-high due to Chelsea’s recent trophy haul.
“Is it entirely his fault?” questioned Cole. “Chelsea are far from where they want to be, that’s undeniable.”
“But considering the money spent and the constant player turnover, I think Mauricio is doing alright,” he continued. “He has limited control over the squad, that much is clear.”
“The expectations are massive, and rightfully so,” Cole said. “For the past two decades, they’ve been accustomed to winning. In terms of trophies, Chelsea were only challenged by Real Madrid in Europe.”
“The key is to have faith and move forward,” Cole insisted on TNT Sports. “Firing the manager isn’t the answer, trust me.”
