Driver Rams into Jail and Threatens to Set Car on Fire, Florida Police Say
Broward County, Florida
– A driver rammed his car into the Broward County Jail on Sunday, January 22, 2023, and threatened to set it on fire, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO). The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. when deputies responded to a call about a vehicle fire at the jail located at 3400 West Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. Upon arrival, deputies found a black Mercedes-Benz sedan crashed into the front gate of the jail. The driver, identified as 42-year-old Anthony Allegro, was still inside the vehicle and was reportedly making threats. Witnesses told deputies that Allegro had driven his car through the gate at a high speed and then reversed, crashing into the gate again. He then allegedly climbed out of the car and began pouring gasoline on it, threatening to set it on fire. Deputies quickly apprehended Allegro and took him into custody. He was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, arson, and criminal mischief. During the incident, several deputies sustained minor injuries while apprehending Allegro. None of the injuries were life-threatening. The Sheriff’s Office reported that the jail was placed on lockdown during the incident but has since reopened. The motive for Allegro’s actions is still under investigation. Witnesses reported that he had been acting erratically prior to the incident and may have been experiencing a mental health crisis. “This was a dangerous and reckless act that could have had serious consequences,” said Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony. “We are grateful that no one was seriously injured.” Allegro is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, January 23, 2023, for a bond hearing.
