Baltimore Orioles Sign Free Agent Veteran Starter to Deal
Baltimore, MD
– The Baltimore Orioles have officially signed free agent starting pitcher Wade Miley to a one-year contract, the team announced today. Miley, 36, is a veteran of 13 major league seasons with the Diamondbacks, Astros, Brewers, Cardinals, Reds, Cubs, and Braves. He has a career record of 103-83 with a 4.16 ERA in 261 starts. Last season with the Cardinals, Miley made 32 starts and went 11-7 with a 3.37 ERA. He finished the year with 167 strikeouts in 178.1 innings pitched. The Orioles are hoping that Miley can provide some stability to their starting rotation. The team’s starters had a combined 5.13 ERA last season, which was the third-worst mark in the American League. “Wade is a veteran pitcher with a lot of experience,” said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. “He’s a good competitor and he knows how to get the job done. We’re excited to have him join our team.” Miley is expected to slot into the Orioles’ rotation behind John Means and Jordan Lyles. The team is also hoping that prospects Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall can contribute to the rotation at some point this season. The Orioles are coming off a disappointing 52-110 season in 2022. However, the team has made several moves this offseason to improve the roster, including signing Miley and outfielder Adam Frazier. The Orioles are scheduled to open the 2023 season on March 30th against the Chicago White Sox.
Orioles Sign Veteran Starter Jordan Lyles to One-Year Deal
The Baltimore Orioles have signed veteran right-handed starting pitcher Jordan Lyles to a one-year, $1.5 million contract, according to multiple reports. Lyles, 32, is a seven-year MLB veteran who has made 239 career starts with the Astros, Rockies, Padres, Brewers, Rangers, and Pirates. He owns a 52-72 record with a 4.98 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, and 859 strikeouts in 1,144.2 innings pitched. Last season with the Pirates, Lyles went 10-12 with a 5.15 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 158 strikeouts in 173.2 innings. He allowed 179 hits, walked 62 batters, and hit 11 batters. Lyles is expected to slot into the Orioles’ rotation behind Grayson Rodriguez, Dean Kremer, and Kyle Bradish. He will provide a veteran presence to a young staff and help bolster the team’s rotation depth. The Orioles have been active in free agency this offseason, also signing relievers Mychal Givens, Adam Frazier, and Cole Sulser. They are looking to improve upon their 83-79 record from last season and compete for a playoff spot in 2023.
