UAE: More than 300,000 Motorists Fined for Slow Driving in Abu Dhabi Last Year
Abu Dhabi, UAE
– Over 300,000 motorists were fined for driving below the speed limit in Abu Dhabi during 2022, according to statistics released by the Abu Dhabi Police. The authorities have issued 309,969 fines for slow driving, which constitutes a violation of Article 199 of the UAE Federal Traffic Law. The fines were issued through fixed and mobile radars installed across the emirate. Slow driving is considered a hazardous behavior as it can obstruct traffic flow and increase the risk of accidents. The minimum speed limit in Abu Dhabi ranges from 60 to 80 km/h on major highways and 40 km/h in residential areas. In addition to the fines, slow drivers may also face other penalties, such as accumulating black points on their driving license. If a driver accumulates 24 black points within one year, their license will be suspended for a period of three months. Major General Mohammed bin Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Director General of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police, emphasized that slow driving poses a significant safety risk. He urged motorists to adhere to the designated speed limits and avoid driving too slowly. “Slow driving can cause traffic congestion and lead to dangerous situations,” said Al Menhali. “We urge all motorists to drive responsibly and observe the speed limits for the safety of themselves and others on the road.” The Abu Dhabi Police have launched several initiatives to address the issue of slow driving. These initiatives include deploying police patrols to monitor traffic flow and installing additional speed cameras in areas where slow driving is prevalent. The authorities have also called on the public to report slow drivers by calling the Abu Dhabi Police’s hotline number, 999. Motorists can also report slow drivers through the Abu Dhabi Police’s mobile application. By enforcing speed limits and penalizing slow drivers, the Abu Dhabi Police aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of traffic accidents.
