Nottingham Open: Freak Accident Sidelines Liam Broady, Cameron Norrie Receives Wildcard
The Nottingham Open tennis tournament has been dealt a blow with the withdrawal of British player Liam Broady due to a freak accident. The 29-year-old suffered a serious ankle injury after slipping on wet tiles at a coffee shop. Broady, who was scheduled to compete in the ATP Challenger event at Nottingham Tennis Centre, expressed his disappointment on social media. “Gutted to withdraw from Nottingham after an unfortunate accident slipping on wet tiles,” he wrote. “I was really looking forward to playing again in front of a home crowd, but unfortunately, it’s not going to be this week.” In Broady’s absence, British star Cameron Norrie has been granted a wildcard entry into the tournament. Norrie, currently ranked 11th in the world, is the highest-ranked player to participate in the event. The 26-year-old is coming off a successful clay-court season, reaching the semifinals of the Barcelona Open and the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open. Norrie is excited to return to Nottingham, where he has enjoyed success in the past. “I’m delighted to have received a wildcard for the Nottingham Open,” he said. “I have always loved playing in Nottingham, and it’s a great opportunity to play in front of a home crowd again.” Tournament Director Paul Hutchins expressed his sympathy for Broady and his joy at Norrie’s inclusion. “We are disappointed to lose Liam to injury but we send him our best wishes for a speedy recovery,” he said. “We are thrilled to welcome Cameron to Nottingham. He is one of the most exciting players in the world right now and his presence will undoubtedly elevate the tournament.” The Nottingham Open will take place from June 11-19. It will be the first ATP Challenger event on grass in the United Kingdom since 2019.
