Arsenal ended the 2023/24 season with a strong-willed 2-1 victory over Everton, but it was not enough to win the Premier League title.
Due to injury, the starting line-up of the Gunners was missing Bukayo Saka, whose place was taken by Gabriel Martinelli. Jurrien Timber was included in the team’s application for the first time since August, being among the reserves.
The Toffees’ starting line-up has not changed relative to the 1-0 win over Sheffield United last weekend.
The match at the Emirates began with the attacks of the hosts, although the news that swept through the stadium about City’s quick goal in a parallel match cooled the ardor of the stands.
Arsenal kept pushing, but couldn’t get the ball into the net. Everton were silent in front until the 32nd minute, when Calvert-Levin entered the penalty area and hit the post. Dominic himself got the opportunity to play on finishing, but did not even hit the target.
The visitors waited for their second chance in the 40th minute, when Idrissa Gaye struck from a free kick, and a rebound from Declan Rice did not allow David Ray to save his team — 0:1.
However, the Toffees led the score for only three minutes, because Takehiro Tomiyasu, who joined the attack, hit the goal from outside the penalty area after Martin Edegor’s pass back from the front line — 1:1.
In the second half, Arsenal attacked continuously, but the ball stubbornly did not go into Jordan Pickford’s goal. Everton saved the goal frame twice.
The fatal bad luck of the Gunners was interrupted in the 89th minute. The Toffees made a gross mistake in defense and allowed the opponent to conduct a counterattack, at the end of which Edegor allowed Kai Havertz to shoot the goal from a couple of meters — 2:1.
Arsenal won with a big squeak, but it was not enough for the championship. City opened the scoring in the parallel match very early, so the Gunners felt despair for the vast majority of their match.
