Liverpool have announced that defender Joel Matip and midfielder Tiago Alcantara will leave the club as free agents at the end of the season.
Matip, 32, spent eight seasons at Liverpool, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League with the Merseysiders.
In total, Matip played 201 matches for Liverpool, the last of which was a 4-3 victory over Fulham in early December, when the Cameroonian tore cruciate knee ligaments.
Like Matip, Alcantara is currently injured. In general, this season the 33-year-old Spaniard has played only five minutes, appearing as a substitute against Arsenal in early February.
In total, Alcantara has made 98 appearances for Liverpool since his transfer from Bayern Munich for 25 million pounds in September 2020. Together with the Reds, Tiago managed to win only one big trophy — the FA Cup in the 2021/22 season.
Parting with Matip and Alcantara, whose contracts expire at the end of the season, will be the first stage of Liverpool’s restructuring in the post-Jurgen Klopp era.
