Tottenham broke their streak of four defeats in a row and, having won a strong-willed victory over Burnley with a score of 2:1, saw off Vincent Kompany’s team back to the Championship.
Compared to the 4-2 defeat by Liverpool, Oliver Skipp and James Maddison returned to the starting line-up of Spurs, replacing Emerson Royal and Rodrigo Bentancourt.
The coach of the “maroon” Vincent Kompany limited himself to a single permutation at the start, releasing Charlie Taylor instead of Josh Brownhill.
The match started from the moment Maddison, under whose shot the defender rushed. Burnley responded with Vitinho’s header, but Guglielmo Vicario dragged the ball out from under the crossbar, and Christian Romero did not allow his opponent to play on finishing.
Tottenham looked preferable, but conceded in the 25th minute. Sander Berge brought Jakob Bruun Larsen one—on-one with an excellent diagonal pass, and he did not miss his chance – 0:1.
The Spurs did not get upset, having recovered quite quickly. In the 32nd minute, Pedro Porro burst into someone else’s penalty area on the right edge and hit the near corner of the goal with a powerful shot – 1:1.
The score obliged the visitors to play for victory, but after the break they had almost no chances, except for Maxim Estev’s header when the ball went over the crossbar.
The hosts also could not boast of an abundance of chances after the break, but from time to time they forced Aro Muric to enter the game, and in the 82nd minute the Burnley goalkeeper did not help out when Mickey Van de Ven received the ball on the approaches to the penalty area, entered the court and struck a sweeping left—foot shot – 2:1.
Despite the slim chances of achieving their tournament goals, both teams needed a win. In the end, Tottenham won, and it looks fair — Burnley were toothless for most of the match.
