England midfielder Jordan Henderson may be forced to leave Ajax and return to his homeland next summer.
Henderson, the former Liverpool captain, only joined Ajax in January, where he moved after several months at Saudi Al-Ittifaq.
Henderson’s contract with Ajax runs until June 2026, but the Amsterdam club found itself in a difficult financial situation after failing to qualify for the Champions League or at least the Europa League for next season.
And since Henderson is one of the highest-paid players at Ajax, the Johan Cruyff Arena club is obliged to think about parting with the 33-year-old Englishman. Steven Bergwein can be asked to leave in the same way.
The Athletic adds that Henderson and Bergwein, who bought from Tottenham in the summer of 2022, have not yet seen signs of the project they were promised when moving to Amsterdam. Ajax is in deep crisis and has not even decided on a new head coach yet, having failed to lure its number one target in the person of Graham Potter.
