Arsenal legend Paul Merson has criticized West Ham for the decision to turn down the services of their head coach David Moyes.
The day before, West Ham confirmed that Moyes’ contract, which expires at the end of the season, will not be extended. The Hammers are going to invite former Wolverhampton coach Julen Lopetegui to take David’s place.
The decision to part ways with Moyes reflects the dissatisfaction of West Ham’s managers and fans this season, but Merson is quick to remind them that David only won the Conference League last season.
West Ham must be careful what they wish for. Moyes achieved something there, he won a European trophy. And they will finish confidently in the top 7, top 8, top 9 or the top half of the table again.”
“I’m not saying the same thing will happen to them, but I remember how many years ago Charlton fans demanded to get rid of Alan Kerbishli, saying that with him the team plays boring and is in the middle of the table. They wanted more.”
“They have never achieved this since. Moyes is a coach of the highest, highest level. They won the European trophy! It’s crazy.”
“I would never get rid of him. West Ham fans can say this and that, give any statistics in the world, but in response I will give them the main thing. He. Won. for you. A trophy.”
“I don’t care about this spectacular football and talking about how they should play better with these players. They won the trophy! Look at Arsenal — they are incredible, but they can be left empty—handed,” Merson told Sky Sports.
