Mohamed Salah returned to the starting line-up of the Reds, replacing Ryan Gravenberch. The recovered Conor Bradley is located in the reserve.
Spurs coach Ange Postecoglou reacted to the 2-0 defeat by Chelsea by removing Richarlison from the start and putting his trust in Rodrigo Bentancourt.
Tottenham started the match cheerfully enough, and then Liverpool snapped back with two most dangerous moments. First, Salah cut the ball into the crossbar. Then Harvey Elliott tried to hit the goal, but Christian Romero stood on the line.
The hosts definitely got into the game and opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Cody Gakpo threw the ball to the far post, and there Mohamed Salah hit the corner of the goal with his head — 1-0.
After opening the scoring, Liverpool continued to dictate the game and create chances. Tottenham kept the ball well in stretches, but did not threaten Alisson’s goal.
At the end of the first half, the Reds doubled the score. Andy Robertson played the finishing shot from close range after Guglielmo Vicario deflected Salah’s shot 2-0.
The second half began with Liverpool’s third goal. Elliott hung from the right flank on the approaches to the goalkeeper, and Gakpo struck with his head — 3-0.
Soon Tottenham still played one moment, but Alisson deflected a header from Brennan Johnson.
In the 59th minute, another goal happened. Elliott shifted along the edge of the penalty area, after which he delivered a twisted left—footed shot – 4-0.
After four goals, the Reds relaxed and were punished for it in the 72nd minute. Johnson shot from the right flank into the penalty area, and Richard Allison, who came on as a substitute, shot past Alisson — 4:1.
Seven minutes later, Spurs scored another goal. Richarlison threw the ball to Son Hyun-min in the penalty area, and he struck with the second touch from the 11—meter mark – 4:2.
Tottenham suddenly felt that this match could still be saved by attacking without looking at their own goal. Salah could have taken advantage of this, but he missed the goal from a couple of meters away.
The guests continued to take risks until the end of the match, keeping the Anfield spectators in suspense, but rather they could miss more. Salah even scored, but his second goal was cancelled out due to offside.
Liverpool spent the first hour in a dominant manner, but after four goals they relaxed, thinking that the job was done. It turned out to be a mistake, because Tottenham got into the game and created a lot of problems for their opponent in the end.
