Former England striker Jermain Defoe could be stepping into the dugout at his old stomping ground, Sunderland, for his first shot at senior management.

Sunderland have been manager-hunting since parting ways with Michael Beale in February. The team has been under the temporary leadership of Mike Dodds.

Defoe, currently coaching Tottenham’s U-18 squad since last August, met with Sunderland officials in early April for informal discussions.

“It wasn’t a formal interview,” Defoe clarified to the Sunderland Echo. “We discussed potential staff and even attracting top young talent to help the club reach the Premier League again.”

“That’s the gist of it, nothing concrete yet. I just watched the Leeds game to get a feel for the team, that’s all,” he added.
