The Premier League champions were in devastating form from the outset as they stormed into a 4-0 lead within the opening 28 minutes. Phil Foden opened the scoring after just four minutes, followed by goals from Riyad Mahrez, Erling Haaland and Rico Lewis. Haaland continued his impressive start to life in England with a second goal in the 38th minute, before Mahrez completed his hat-trick after the break. Lewis Baker pulled one back for Wycombe in the 75th minute, but it proved to be a mere consolation as City cruised to victory. The six goals scored by City set a new record for the most goals scored by a Premier League team in the League Cup third round. They also became the first team to score four goals in the first half of a League Cup game since Liverpool in 1994. Mahrez’s hat-trick was particularly impressive, making him the first Manchester City player to score three goals in the League Cup since Sergio Aguero in 2014. Haaland’s brace extended his scoring streak in all competitions to six games. The victory was a resounding statement of intent from City as they look to retain their Carabao Cup crown. They have now won the competition six times in the past nine seasons, and will be confident of adding another trophy to their collection this year. For Wycombe, despite the heavy defeat, there were positives to take. They showed great spirit in the second half and managed to pull a goal back through Baker. They will now turn their attention back to League One, where they currently sit in 13th place.
