Western Branch Pitcher Gavin Biernot Named Class 6 Region A Player of the Year

Western Branch High School’s Gavin Biernot has been named the Class 6 Region A Player of the Year in baseball by the Virginia High School League (VHSL). The senior pitcher and first baseman led the Bruins to a 17-6 record and a regional runner-up finish. Biernot had an exceptional season on the mound, posting a 7-1 record with a 1.14 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched. He also recorded five complete games and three shutouts. At the plate, Biernot batted .479 with seven home runs, 32 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.476. He was a key contributor to Western Branch’s high-powered offense, which averaged over eight runs per game. Biernot’s outstanding performance earned him numerous accolades this season, including: * Class 6 Region A Player of the Year * District Player of the Year * First Team All-Region * First Team All-District * All-Tidewater First Team “Gavin has been a tremendous leader for our team both on and off the field,” said Western Branch head coach Dennis Hussey. “He’s a hard worker and a fierce competitor. It’s no surprise that he’s been recognized as the top player in the region.” Biernot, who has committed to continue his baseball career at the University of Virginia, is one of the most highly-regarded prospects in the state of Virginia. He has impressed scouts with his athleticism, mound presence, and ability to dominate opposing hitters. With his Class 6 Region A Player of the Year honor, Biernot joins an elite group of Western Branch baseball players who have earned the prestigious recognition. Previous winners include current Major League All-Star Andrew Benintendi and former MLB pitcher Tommy Milone. “It’s an honor to be named Player of the Year,” said Biernot. “I’ve worked hard to get to this point, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent Western Branch and the Region A.”

– Western Branch High School pitcher Gavin Biernot has been named the Class 6 Region A Player of the Year by the Daily Press. Biernot, a senior right-hander, had an outstanding season on the mound, leading the Bruins to a 15-5 record and a berth in the region semifinals. He finished with a 9-1 record, a 1.21 ERA, and 97 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched. At the plate, Biernot batted .342 with four doubles, two home runs, and 19 RBIs. Biernot’s performance helped Western Branch win its first region title since 2015. He was also named to the All-Region First Team and the All-Conference First Team. Biernot is committed to play baseball at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
