A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged with operating an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol after crashing into a parked car on Saturday night, according to South Gray Police. Police were dispatched to the intersection of Main Street and Elm Street around 11:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a traffic accident. Upon arrival, officers found an electric scooter overturned in the roadway and a parked car with damage to its rear bumper. The scooter driver, identified as John Doe, was lying on the ground nearby with minor injuries. Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and conducted a field sobriety test, which he failed. Doe was transported to the South Gray Police Department, where he was booked into jail on charges of operating an electric scooter while intoxicated (EWI) and reckless driving. He has since been released on bond. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), electric scooter-related accidents have been on the rise in recent years. In 2022, there were an estimated 14,000 electric scooter-related injuries in the United States. – A woman has been charged with driving an electric scooter while intoxicated after she was involved in a crash with a car. On Tuesday, July 19, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers from the South Gray Police Department responded to a report of a collision involving an electric scooter and a car at the intersection of Main Street and Elm Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a 25-year-old woman lying on the ground next to an electric scooter. The woman, identified as Sarah Jones, was conscious and alert but had visible injuries. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the car, a 50-year-old man, was not injured. Witnesses told police that Jones was riding her electric scooter down Main Street when she ran a red light and collided with the car. Officers conducted a DUI investigation and determined that Jones was intoxicated. She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Jones is scheduled to appear in court on August 10, 2023.
