Yobe Government Conducts Over 50,000 Free Dialysis Sessions in Five Years
Damaturu, Yobe State –
The Yobe State government has conducted more than 50,000 free dialysis sessions for patients with kidney disease in the state over the past five years, according to an official. The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Health Management Agency (YOSHMA), Dr. Babagana Tijjani, disclosed this at a press briefing in Damaturu, the state capital, on Thursday, February 16, 2023. Tijjani explained that the government established a Dialysis Center at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital (YSUTH) in Damaturu in 2018 to provide affordable and accessible dialysis services to patients who could not afford private dialysis clinics. He said that the center has since then conducted over 50,000 free dialysis sessions, saving the lives of thousands of patients who would otherwise have had to travel long distances or pay exorbitant fees for treatment. “In 2018, we started with one dialysis machine, and today, we have 20 machines fully functional,” Tijjani said. “We have provided over 50,000 free dialysis sessions, and this has saved many lives.” The Executive Secretary noted that the government is committed to expanding access to healthcare services for all residents of the state, including those living with chronic illnesses such as kidney disease. He urged patients with kidney disease to take advantage of the free dialysis services provided by the government and to seek early medical attention to prevent further complications. Dr. Tijjani also commended the medical staff at the Dialysis Center for their dedication and hard work in providing quality care to patients. The Dialysis Center at YSUTH is one of the few public dialysis centers in the northeastern region of Nigeria, serving patients from Yobe State and neighboring states. The free dialysis services provided by the government have significantly reduced the financial burden on patients and their families and improved their quality of life.
